I broke with convention for this week’s journal quilt of June 23 – 29, 2011, and made a much bigger, wall-hanging sized quilt. I made the quilt the week of my birthday and wanted to have 36 candles around the border, but didn’t want to have to piece tiny, tiny ones. (And, yes, if you’ve done the math, I had 36 candles 4 years ago so the big 4-0 is upon me.) So, here’s my larger 36th birthday journal quilt:
I couched on some purple yarn from one of those fiber packs that I had no idea what I would do with, but just had to have from a vendor at a quilt show to be the frosting along the edges of each layer of the cake. The candles are pieced (and gave me the chance to use some great shiny purple dot fabric that I have), but the candle flames are fusible applique. I made the borders first and then cut the interior to match, rather than trusting my math and precise piecing. Now that I am looking at it again I have no idea why I chose black to be the background. It seems a little dark to me. Maybe I had issues with turning 36 that I didn’t recognize at the time. 🙂
