In July, the Craft Industry Alliance, of which I am a member, published an interesting and personal blog post from Carrie Bloomston about her decision to give up trying to make a living as an artist and to take a job with a steady paycheck and health insurance instead. The post garnered a lot of comments, mostly supportive of Carrie’s decision and often reflecting that her experience is widely shared. I like to think that following one’s bliss and being a full-time artist is actually possible, but my gut tells me that Carrie’s experience is the common one. What are your thoughts? Can a creative career pay?
