Exercise #1 in Stage Five of the Creativity Journey – Walk Forward
We all have emotional baggage slowing us down. Whether we intend to or not, we can accumulate quite a weight of hurts and pain that can shackle us and prevent us from pursuing the life we want. It’s time to take a look and see what you’ve been carrying around.
Close your eyes and sit comfortably. Imagine yourself stopping on your journey for a rest. If you’re traveling through a jungle as I am, perhaps you find your own smooth rock next to a waterfall where you can drop your pack and sit for a spell. If your journey takes you through the desert, imagine that you stumble upon a lush oasis of trees with a clear spring bubbling up through the sand. Stop for a refreshing drink and sit back against the trunk of a palm with your eyes closed.
Next, envision yourself opening the pack that you’ve been carrying. Imagine that you begin pulling stuff out of it and laying it all out on the ground in front of you. Feel into the little corners of the pack and make sure you’ve found everything that’s in there. What do you see laid out before you? Look carefully at every item and notice its details. Then when you are ready, open your eyes and jot down a list of the items that you are carrying.
If you choose your eyes, focus for a few moments, and see nothing, try to explore your baggage with words instead. Sit down with a few sheets of paper and a pen and begin free writing. Just let your pen keep moving no matter what words are coming out of it. You might be very surprised to find what a freely moving pen unearths.
