Nearly a decade ago, I went through an identity crisis. At the time, I decided that I would make myself a quilt for my birthday using 40 pieces of cherished purple batiks.. I also decided that I would make it represent me in some way, other than just having the favorite fabrics, so I included pictures of me at various stages in life, but also ones that represented who I am as a person.
Last week when I wrote down the things that are important to me, I realized that they were the same things I included in that quilt.. I have changed a lot in the last decade, but those core aspects of my identity have not changed.
In hindsight, I realized that the identity process I was working through was an essential step in uncovering my creative voice. My creative voice emerges from who I am as a person and in order for that to happen, I needed to know who I was first. Have you uncovered your creative voice? Maybe you have a bit but the voice is faint? In order to better hear that voice, remind yourself of who you are at your core.
- How would you describe yourself in 5 words?

- When everything else falls away, when you don’t have a job title or a family role to define you, who are you really?
